I consulted for Benchfly by wireframing innovative solutions to problems they discovered during user testing and analysis. They wanted to improve their users' efficacy with their file system, specifically file hierarchy, actions and user permissions.
After conducting numerous user interviews we found that, because of an unintuitive user experience design from start to finish, teachers were organizing video files very inefficiently.

We decided to circumvent mistakes by limiting actions as well as providing verbal and visual direction from the start that created user habits we wanted.

Another problem Benchfly faced was that teachers were finding it difficult to manage and keep track of user permissions so folders would end up containing content uploaded by both teachers and students.

The solution was to add icons to each folder that displayed its properties visually and to add a method of changing those properties at the folder level.

Finally, Benchfly had trouble representing group actions to its teachers, who often ended up carrying out actions (such as moving videos) one by one. The solution we came up with was to allow for a multiple item selection GUI and an action toolbar that shows up when its intuitively needed.
